Note: This article compares several e-commerce platforms available only in Japan (BASE, STORES, MakeShop, and Color Me Shop) alongside Shopify. This will not be relevant if you are not evaluating platforms for the Japanese market.
Many people worry, "I want to build an e-commerce site with an ASP, but there are so many services that I can't tell them apart." ASPs (Application Service Providers) differ greatly from one service to another in pricing structure and strengths, so if you choose based on the monthly fee alone, you may later struggle with fees or a lack of features.
In this article, we organize the pricing, fees, and features of 17 major e-commerce ASPs in comparison tables and introduce them by purpose. We also explain the key points for choosing a service, so please use this as a reference when narrowing down the candidates that fit your business.
※ This article is based on a manuscript from September 2026, and each company's official pricing was confirmed on October 1, 2026. Please check each service's official website for the latest pricing and features and for the terms of individual contracts.
What is an e-commerce ASP?
An e-commerce ASP is a service that lets you use the features an online shop needs over the internet. It is also called an "ASP cart" or an "e-commerce cart." Because you do not need to prepare a server or develop a system, you can open an e-commerce site in a short time even without specialized knowledge.
Characteristics of ASPs and how they differ from other build methods
Besides ASPs, the ways to build an e-commerce site are package and full scratch.
| Build method | Initial cost | Design and feature flexibility | Businesses it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASP | Low | Low to medium | Want to start at low cost and in a short time |
| Package | High | High | Mid-sized to large businesses with many custom requirements |
| Full scratch | Very high | Very high | Need a completely original system |
Because the provider handles system maintenance and security for an ASP, operators can more easily focus on registering products and attracting customers. The extent of customization, however, varies by service, and adding your own features may require installing apps or additional development.
Note that, unlike opening a shop on an e-commerce marketplace such as Amazon or Rakuten Ichiba, what you build with an ASP is your own e-commerce site. Compared with a marketplace, you have more freedom in design and in managing customer data, but you generally need to attract customers yourself.
The article below explains in detail how these build methods differ.
Costs and fees for using an ASP
The cost of an ASP needs to be considered across several items, not just the monthly fee.
| Cost | Description | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Initial cost | A fee charged only once, when the contract is signed | Many services are free |
| Monthly cost | System usage fee | The amount may differ between monthly and annual payment |
| Payment processing fee | A set percentage of sales is charged for each order | The rate changes depending on the payment method and the plan |
| Sales commission and service usage fee | Charged according to sales or the number of orders, separately from the payment processing fee | Often applied on free plans |
| Transfer fee | The fee for transferring sales proceeds to your bank account | Check it along with the transfer cycle |
| Option and app fees | Usage fees for additional features | Whether the features you need are available as standard |
Plans with a monthly fee of ¥0 tend to set payment processing fees and sales commissions on the high side. The more your sales grow, the heavier the fee burden becomes, so compare the total cost based on your expected monthly sales.

Estimated monthly cost by monthly sales
Between ¥0-per-month plans and paid plans, which service is less expensive changes with monthly sales. For the major services, we estimated the total of the monthly fee and payment processing fees.
| Service (plan) | Monthly sales of ¥100,000 | Monthly sales of ¥500,000 | Monthly sales of ¥1,000,000 | Monthly sales of ¥3,000,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BASE (Standard plan) | ¥7,400 | ¥37,000 | ¥74,000 | ¥222,000 |
| BASE (Growth plan) | ¥19,480 | ¥31,080 | ¥45,580 | ¥103,580 |
| STORES (Free) | ¥5,500 | ¥27,500 | ¥55,000 | ¥165,000 |
| STORES (Standard) | ¥6,900 | ¥21,300 | ¥39,300 | ¥111,300 |
| Shopify (Basic) | ¥7,565 | ¥21,765 | ¥39,515 | ¥110,515 |
| Color Me Shop (Regular) | ¥8,350 | ¥21,950 | ¥38,950 | ¥106,950 |
※Calculated with an average order value of ¥5,000, all payments by domestic credit card, and monthly fees as the per-month amount under annual billing or an annual contract. Shopify is calculated at ¥4,015 per month, which is the monthly fee plus 10% consumption tax. Transfer fees and the cost of apps or options are not included. Color Me Shop is calculated at the current monthly fee of ¥4,950. BASE excludes orders from the PAY ID app. The STORES figures are reference estimates based on published standard rates, and individual consultation may be required depending on sales volume. Differences in rates by card brand or individual contract, and per-order rounding, are not reflected.
At ¥100,000 in monthly sales, the STORES Free plan is the least expensive, and at around ¥500,000 in monthly sales, plans that charge a monthly fee become less expensive. Under the conditions of this estimate, the BASE Growth plan is the least expensive at ¥3,000,000 in monthly sales.
Actual costs vary depending on each service's pricing, payment methods, the features you use, and other factors.
If you want to find a service that fits your goals, see the introduction to each category under the headings below.
- ASPs you can start for free or at low cost
- ASPs for building a full-scale e-commerce site
- ASPs strong in recurring sales and subscriptions
- ASPs strong in cross-border e-commerce
Points for choosing an e-commerce ASP that fits your business
Pricing, features, and support differ by ASP, so it is important to check from several angles whether a service fits your goals and scale. Here we explain five points to keep in mind when comparing and evaluating ASPs.
Compare setup fees, monthly fees, and transaction fees
It is important to compare ASP costs as the total of the monthly fee and transaction fees. For example, BASE's Standard plan has a monthly fee of ¥0, but a payment processing fee and a service fee are charged on each order. The Growth plan, by contrast, charges a monthly fee in exchange for lower fees.
While monthly sales are still low, a ¥0-per-month plan may keep total costs down, but as sales grow a paid plan can sometimes cost less overall. Estimate the total at the monthly sales you expect, and also check how easy it is to change plans.
Check the features and customization you need
Check whether the service supports the sales methods you want, such as pre-orders, subscriptions, name personalization, and membership tiers. Some services cover these with standard features, while others require a paid option or an additional app.
If design matters to you, also check whether you can edit the HTML and CSS.
Check payment methods and integrations with external services
Besides credit cards, check whether the service supports payment methods your customers often use, such as convenience store payment, deferred payment, and PayPay. If few payment methods are available, some customers may abandon the purchase.
It also matters whether the service can integrate with online marketplaces, in-store POS registers, inventory management systems, shipping services, and similar tools. Integrations make it easier to reduce the work of managing orders and inventory.
Consider your business size and future scalability
Even if you start small, it is reassuring to check whether you can handle growth by changing plans or adding features. Switching ASPs involves work such as migrating data and changing URLs.
If you need to integrate with your own core system or do large-scale development, options other than an ASP are also worth considering. If you want a broader comparison that includes non-ASP options, see the article below as well.
Check support and contract terms
Support differs by service, including whether you can consult by phone or chat and whether you can get help with setup when you launch. If this is your first time running an e-commerce site, how much support you get is also part of the decision.
Also check the minimum contract period, whether you can use your own domain, and whether you can export product and customer data. On services that offer a free trial, you can try how easy the admin is to use before you sign a contract.
ASPs you can start for free or at low cost
Here are ASPs suited to merchants who want to start an e-commerce site while keeping setup and monthly costs down.
BASE

BASE is an online store builder you can start on the Standard plan, which has ¥0 in setup and monthly fees. You can create a shop just by choosing a design theme, and you can add features such as pre-orders and social media integration with "BASE Apps."
If your sales grow, you can switch to the Growth plan, which charges a monthly fee in exchange for lower fees. The features available are the same on both plans; the difference is the monthly fee and the fees.
One thing to note: on the Standard plan, a 3% service fee is charged in addition to the payment processing fee. Compare the total with the Growth plan before your monthly sales grow large.
STORES

STORES is a service that lets you use an online store together with a POS register, cashless payments, a booking system, and more. Because it makes it easy to manage in-store and online inventory and sales in one place, it is a good fit for merchants who want to start e-commerce while running a physical store.
There is a Free plan at ¥0 per month and a Standard plan at ¥3,300 per month (annual contract). On the Standard plan, payment processing fees are lower, and you can use features that are not available on the Free plan, such as setting up your own domain.
Sales proceeds are normally transferred at the end of the following month, but if the payout amount is under ¥10,000, it may be carried over to a later month depending on your transfer settings. The standard transfer fee is ¥275, and if you set transfers to go through even under ¥10,000, an administrative fee of ¥275 is also charged. "Speed Cash (スピードキャッシュ)" can deposit funds as soon as the next day; in addition to the regular payment processing fee, a ¥275 transfer fee and a Speed Cash fee (3.5% on Free and 1.5% on Standard) apply. If the day after you apply is a weekend or holiday, the transfer is made on the next business day.
Ochanoko Net

Ochanoko Net is a long-established ASP that has offered its service since 2004. Plans range from the Startup plan at ¥0 per month to the Basic and Advanced plans, which let you expand the number of products and the available features.
Even the paid plans keep the monthly fee relatively low, and they include features you need for long-term operation, such as subscriptions, membership tiers, and wholesale settings.
Note, however, that the Startup plan's payment processing fee is high at 6.6% (excluding tax). Once your sales grow, consider switching to a paid plan.
Raku-Uru Cart

Raku-Uru Cart is an ASP provided by the Yamato Group. It integrates with Yamato's shipping services, so you can issue shipping labels and check delivery status from the admin. You can also use a feature that lets customers specify a pickup location, such as a convenience store.
The Light plan is low-cost at ¥3,960 per year (¥330 per month), but a usage fee of 1.1% of the order amount applies. Once your sales grow, compare it with higher-tier plans that do not charge a usage fee. It is also reassuring to check the conditions for changing plans.
It is a good fit for merchants who want to reduce the work of shipping and who mainly use Yamato Transport.
Easy My Shop

Easy My Shop is strong at detailed option settings such as name personalization and size specification, which makes it easy to handle made-to-order products and set sales. It also supports pre-orders and subscription sales.
A free version at ¥0 per month and paid plans such as Standard are available. Standard is ¥3,900 per month on a 12-month contract, and ¥4,230 per month on a 3- to 11-month contract. The free version's payment processing fee is set high, at 5.0% + ¥40 (excluding tax), so consider switching to a paid plan depending on your sales.
It is a good fit for merchants who want to sell products whose specifications change from order to order, such as commemorative items and gifts.
ASPs that can build a full-scale e-commerce site
Here are ASPs suited to people who are particular about features and design and want to run a full-scale operation as their business grows.
Shopify

Shopify is an e-commerce platform from Canada that is used around the world. Its app store offers a large number of apps, and you can add features such as pre-orders, subscriptions, and delivery date and time selection as needed. Because you can support multiple languages and currencies with Shopify's free official apps and Shopify Payments, it is also a good fit for merchants who want to start with domestic sales and later expand into cross-border e-commerce.
Even if sales grow, you can switch to a higher plan while keeping your store's data and design. Being able to support business growth without rebuilding your e-commerce site is a major strength.
Note that if you use an external payment service other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges its own transaction fee, separate from the payment processing fee, depending on the payment method.
Color Me Shop

Color Me Shop is a long-established ASP provided by GMO Pepabo. There are four plans, from the Free plan at ¥0 per month to the Premium plan, and the sales commission is ¥0 on every plan.
In addition to editing the design with HTML and CSS, you can add features such as pre-orders and membership ranks from the app store. It is a good fit for merchants who want to run a full-scale online shop for the domestic market at a relatively low running cost.
Note that monthly fees for the Regular and Large plans are scheduled to be revised starting November 1, 2026. When the new fees apply depends on the contract start date, the timing of renewal and payment, and the payment method, so also check the official terms of application when you sign a contract.
makeshop

makeshop is an ASP provided by GMO Make Shop. It comes with a wealth of standard features useful for running an online shop, such as membership features, coupons, and SEO settings. Some features, such as subscriptions, can be added as paid options.
If you use the options, you can centrally manage products and inventory with marketplaces such as Rakuten Ichiba and Yahoo! Shopping. It is also a good fit for merchants who want to run their own e-commerce site alongside marketplaces.
The flagship Premium plan has a setup fee of ¥11,000 and a monthly fee of ¥13,750 on a monthly contract, and you can register up to 10,000 products. There is also a discount for long-term contracts: on a 24-month contract, the cost is ¥11,688 per month. If you use "makeshop Payment" for credit card payments, a separate monthly fee applies.
futureshop

futureshop is a SaaS e-commerce platform chosen by merchants who prioritize branding. Because you can freely build the design with HTML, CSS, and more, a defining feature is how easily you can express a brand's world.
You can also take on omnichannel initiatives, such as sharing membership information and points between physical stores and e-commerce and offering in-store pickup, by using the plans and features that support them. If you are adopting it in order to integrate with physical stores, check the plans you need and the total cost.
The monthly fee starts at ¥27,000 (excluding tax), so the cost is on the high side. Because the fee changes with the number of registered products, check the plan against the number of products you carry.
Shop Serve

Shop Serve is an ASP provided by Estore with a track record of more than 20 years. It is characterized by support from a dedicated representative and by proposals for tactics to attract customers and increase sales.
It also has a strong reputation for system stability, and is a good fit for merchants who want to move toward full-scale operations even when they have little in-house know-how for running e-commerce.
Be aware that order processing fees and payment-related costs are charged separately in addition to the monthly fee. Estimate the number of orders per month, and compare on total cost.
ASPs strong in recurring mail-order and subscriptions
Here are ASPs suited to merchants who sell mainly through subscriptions, in categories such as health foods and cosmetics. ASPs specialized in recurring mail-order are well equipped with features for managing subscriptions and improving retention rates.
ecforce

It also includes AI-powered features for sales analysis and for recommending tactics, and is a good fit for merchants who want to improve sales based on data.
The Standard plan has a setup fee of ¥148,000 and a monthly fee of ¥49,800 (both excluding tax, on a one-year contract), plus a usage-based charge of ¥30 (excluding tax) per order. It covers up to 2,000 orders per month; if you exceed that, you are automatically moved to the Expert plan, and a plan-change fee of ¥198,000 (excluding tax) applies. Payment processing fees are determined by your contract with the payment service provider you use.
W2 Commerce Repeat

W2 Commerce Repeat is an e-commerce platform from W2 Co., Ltd. specialized in recurring mail-order and subscriptions. It comes standard with more than 1,000 features and is well equipped with functions that streamline recurring mail-order operations, such as automated order processing and step emails.
It can support businesses from the launch stage through large-scale operations, so it is a good fit for merchants who want to grow sales significantly through recurring mail-order. Check the official pricing materials or a quote for the setup fee, monthly fee, and usage-based pricing terms.
Smaregi EC Repeat

Smaregi EC Repeat (formerly Raku Raku Repeat) is a cart system from Smaregi specialized in recurring mail-order and single-product mail order. You can use features such as the cart, CRM, step emails, order management, and customer support in a single system.
Changes to delivery cycles, pauses of subscription plans, and similar tasks are easy to manage, and it is a good fit for merchants who want to reduce the operational burden unique to recurring mail-order.
Pricing is listed as starting at ¥49,800 per month, and because there is no usage-based charge tied to sales or the number of orders, system costs tend not to rise even as sales grow. For the total cost, including tax treatment and the plans and features you need, check the official pricing materials or a quote.
Ripisuto X

Ripisuto X is an e-commerce platform from Ripisuto Co., Ltd. for recurring mail-order and subscriptions. It offers features that raise the purchase rate and average order value, including an order form integrated with the landing page, a feature that suggests additional products on the order confirmation and completion screens, and popups to prevent abandonment.
There are three pricing plans, depending on order volume and the scale of the business. The Startup plan for small shops is listed with a setup fee of ¥69,800 (tax included) and a monthly fee of ¥42,800. However, official pages differ on the tax treatment of the monthly fee and on the stated order limit, so check the latest terms and a quote before signing a contract.
You can change plans even during the contract period, and features such as chat and LINE integration can be added as options, so it is a good fit for merchants who want to expand in stages as the business grows.
Color Me Repeat

Color Me Repeat is a cart from GMO Pepabo dedicated to recurring mail-order. Just by registering product information, you can create a product page with an application form and start subscription sales in as little as 10 minutes.
You can also place purchase links on an existing website or blog, so it is a good fit if you want to start subscription sales without a dedicated online shop.
The setup fee is ¥0 and the monthly fee is ¥10,780, and you can prepare for free until you start selling. Compared with other ASPs specialized in recurring mail-order, costs are easier to keep down, and it suits merchants who want to try recurring mail-order on a small scale.
ASPs strong in cross-border e-commerce

The Starter plan's monthly fee starts at ¥4,033 (annual billing, excluding tax). Note that a service fee of 2% is charged in addition to the monthly fee.
Cafe24

Cafe24 is an e-commerce platform from South Korea. The setup fee, monthly fee, and sales commission are all free, and you can create a shop that supports multiple languages and currencies.
Because you can run multiple shops with a single account, you can also use it when you want separate shops for domestic and overseas sales.
Payment processing fees and the cost of paid options are charged separately, but it is a good fit for merchants who want to try cross-border e-commerce without fixed costs.
Choose an ASP that fits your business and build your e-commerce site
E-commerce ASPs vary widely, from those you can start for free to those specialized in recurring mail-order or large-scale operations.
- If you want to start while keeping costs down: BASE, STORES, Ochanoko Net, and others
- If you want to run a full-scale operation: Shopify, Color Me Shop, makeshop, and others
- If you want to start recurring mail-order: ecforce, Smaregi EC Repeat, Color Me Repeat, and others
- If you want to sell overseas: Shopify, SHOPLINE, Cafe24, and others
First, organize your expected monthly sales and the features you need, and narrow the candidates to two or three services. For services with a free plan or a free trial, we recommend actually using the admin to check how easy it is to use.
If you value scalability or cross-border e-commerce, check Shopify's pricing and features and use the free trial to see whether it fits your business. Factor in the additional costs of apps and external payment services as well.
