Explaining Shopify's Payout Cycle | Timing by Payment Method and How to Set Your Payout Schedule

Tsunライターチーム

Note: This article covers payout-cycle details specific to Japanese payment services and platforms (such as Shopify's JPY payout schedule, KOMOJU, SB Payment Service, BASE, STORES, and Colorme Shop) that are used by merchants selling in Japan. The information below will not be directly relevant if you are not selling in the Japanese market.

When running a Shopify store or any EC site, the timing of when sales proceeds are paid out is extremely important. Since the payout cycle differs by platform and payment service, it's important to understand these accurately from a cash-flow management perspective. This article explains in detail the payout cycles of Shopify and other major EC platforms and payment services.

Shopify Payments Payout Cycle

The payout cycle (payment schedule) for Shopify Payments can be set to either "weekly" or "monthly."

Weekly payment schedule

With a "weekly" payment schedule, you can choose the day you receive payment from Monday through Friday.

Monthly payment schedule

With a "monthly" payment schedule, you can choose the day you receive payment, from the 1st through the 31st. If you choose "the 30th" as your payment day and it's a February that has no 30th, payment will be made on February 28th instead.

Note that payment is processed according to your bank's processing time (roughly 1–3 business days), so funds may not appear in your bank account immediately after being sent.

How to Choose a Payment Schedule

(1) From the Shopify admin, go to "Settings > Payments." (2) In the Shopify Payments section, click "Manage."

The first payment is made 16 days after the merchant creates their Seller Central account, and from the second payment onward, payments are processed every two weeks.

Note that if you change your bank account information, payments will be suspended for 3 days.

If you use "Express Payout," funds are deposited as soon as the next business day. (Note that this requires a screening process, and a fee of 1.5% of the requested payout amount applies.)
