"We want to set a minimum purchase amount of ¥10,000 or more for wholesale (B2B) sales."
"We want to cap the amount per order as an anti-resale measure."
When running a Shopify store, there are plenty of situations where you want to set rules around order amounts. However, Shopify's standard features alone make it difficult to flexibly restrict amounts (setting minimum/maximum amounts) on the cart page.
In this article, we introduce 3 recommended apps that let you set price limits on Shopify.
Along with selection points such as "whether Japanese-language support is available" and "richness of features," we explain in detail specific setup examples using popular apps. We hope this helps you find the app that best fits your store's operating rules.
What Is a Price Limit?
In this article, "price limit" refers to setting an upper limit, lower limit, or both, on a single order—for example, "purchasable only from a total of ¥1,000 and up," "purchasable up to a total of ¥3,000," "purchasable between a total of ¥1,000 and ¥3,000," or "specific categories in the store are purchasable up to a total of under ¥5,000."
How to Choose a Price Limit App
When choosing a price limit app, it's good to keep the following 4 points in mind.
- Whether it supports Japanese
- Whether it supports the Cart and Checkout Validation API
- Whether it has the features you need
- How much it costs
Let's look at each in detail.
Whether it supports Japanese
Shopify has many price limit apps.
Choosing an app carelessly just because it's cheap can lead to hidden work costs (such as translation issues or dealing with inquiries when something goes wrong), so be sure to exercise caution.
First, check whether the following support Japanese.
- The storefront (the part shown to end users)
- The app's admin screen
- Help pages
- Support contacts
Whether it supports the Cart and Checkout Validation API
The Cart and Checkout Validation API is new technology released by Shopify in 2024. A price limit app that supports the Cart and Checkout Validation API can block purchases at checkout even in cases such as the following.
- Purchases via a cart button generated with Buy Button
- Purchases via a cart button generated by a third-party app, such as a wishlist app
- Purchases of restricted products left in the cart
- Purchases via a cart button forcibly displayed through custom coding
By choosing a price limit app that supports the Cart and Checkout Validation API, you can prevent the unintended orders described above before they happen.
Whether it has the features you need
Among Shopify apps that can implement price limits, some also offer quantity limits or weight limits, translation features, messaging features, design customization, and more.
It's a good idea to identify the features you absolutely need before choosing an app.
How much it costs
Consider how much budget you can allocate, based on how much functionality your Shopify store needs for price limits.
3 Price Limit Apps
RuffRuff Order Limits
RuffRuff Order Limits is the first Shopify app in Japan to support "Cart and Checkout Validation," achieving a more robust checking system than existing purchase-restriction apps.
Since it's a Shopify app provided by a Japanese company, the admin screen, help pages, and customer support are all fully supported in Japanese.
What makes it unique compared to other purchase restriction options is that it has a translation feature and lets you choose the scope of restriction from three levels: variant, product, or cart. For example, setting a price limit at the cart level lets you achieve limits such as "specific product categories in the store can total up to ¥XX."
It also lets you implement not just price limits, but various other purchase restrictions—quantity limits, bundling restrictions, member restrictions, payment restrictions, and access restrictions—all with a single app.
RuffRuff Order Limits Pricing Plans
RuffRuff Order Limits offers two plans. The Light plan includes the standard order-limit features, while the Full plan also includes cumulative quantity limits across multiple orders.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Main features |

It lets you implement price limits such as "up to ¥XX per order," and can also enforce restrictions based on weight or quantity in addition to price. The admin screen, help pages, and customer support are all in English, so if you're comfortable with English, it may be worth trying out.

How to Set a Price Limit with RuffRuff Order Limits
Here we introduce the steps from installing the app through setting "a price limit of up to ¥2,000 per order."
Step 1. Install the app

First, install RuffRuff Order Limits, introduced above, from the Shopify App Store.
You can find "RuffRuff Order Limits" by searching "ruffruff" on the Shopify App Store.
Once you reach RuffRuff Order Limits' app page on the Shopify App Store, click "Install."
Step 2. Subscribe to the Light Plan
Using RuffRuff Order Limits may require subscribing to the Light Plan. Subscribe to either the monthly or annual (2 months' worth discounted) Light Plan, depending on your business size and how long you plan to use it.

(1) Select the app's "Pricing Plans"
(2) Click "Change Plan" for the plan you want to subscribe to

(3) Check the plan details and click "Approve"
Step 3. Create a price rule
Once you've enabled the embedded app, set up a price rule. Use the price rule to define "what price limit you want to apply to which products."

(1) Select the app's "Price Rules"
(2) Click "Create Rule"

(3) Enter any name for the "Rule Name"
(4) Restriction details > enter 2000 for Maximum Amount
(5) In Target Products, select the products (or collections) you want to apply the price limit to
(6) Add any text you want to the product message or alert message
(7) Click "Save"
Step 4. Enable the embedded app in your Shopify theme
Once you've upgraded your plan, enable the embedded app in your Shopify theme. This makes the product message display, among other things, possible.

(1) From the Shopify admin, go to "Online Store"
(2) Select "Themes" and click "Customize"

(3) Select "App embeds" on the left of the screen
(4) Enable the embedded app named "RuffRuff Order Limits"
(5) Click "Save"
Step 5. Verify the price limit is working
Visit the product you configured in the price rule in Step 3 and confirm that the price limit is functioning.
Visit the product
Visit the product and check whether the product message set in the price rule is being displayed.

Add products to the cart to exceed ¥2,001
Since this example applies a price limit of up to ¥2,000, try adding ¥2,001 or more worth of products to the cart and confirm that the alert message is displayed.

How to Configure Various Price Limits with RuffRuff Order Limits
The setup method described above showed how to configure "up to ¥2,000 per order," but here we introduce several other ways to configure price limits (mainly different values for the price rule).
A price limit that only allows purchases of ¥3,000 or more

Set the Minimum Amount to 3000 under Restriction details. Then set the scope to Variant.
A price limit that only allows purchases between ¥3,000 and ¥6,000

Set the Minimum Amount to 3,000 and the Maximum Amount to 6,000 under Restriction details. Then set the scope to Variant.
A price limit that caps combined purchases of variants of the same product at ¥4,000

Set the Maximum Amount to 4000 under Restriction details, and select the product under scope.
A price limit that caps combined purchases of products in the same collection at ¥6,000

Set the Maximum Amount to 6,000 under Restriction details, and select Cart under scope. Under target products, select the collection you want to apply the price limit to.
What to Do If RuffRuff Order Limits' Price Limit Isn't Working
1. You haven't upgraded to a paid plan
Using the app requires subscribing to the Light Plan.
Even on a development store, you still need to upgrade to the Light Plan.
2. You're checking the product in "preview mode" or the "theme editor"
A product preview only reflects the state at the moment you clicked the preview button. For example, if you make a setting change in the app after clicking the preview button and then refresh the browser, the preview page will not reflect the change. If this happens, reopen the preview page or check in the live environment.
3. The embedded app isn't enabled
If this is the case, go to your Shopify theme's theme editor, enable the embedded app, and check again.
4. The rule isn't enabled
If this is the case, check the status of the relevant rule from the rules screen. If the status is "Disabled," change it to "Enabled" and check again.
5. The collection linked to the rule isn't published
If you want to apply order restrictions to products under a collection, the collection itself needs to be published.
Publish the relevant collection and check again.
6. Changes are taking time to reflect due to caching
Due to Shopify's own caching feature, changes may take some time to reflect. In this case, wait a while and check again.
7. You've customized checkout.liquid
If you've customized checkout.liquid, this app can't be used, since it relies on Shopify Functions, which is incompatible with that customization.

In Closing
This article introduced 3 recommended apps that can implement price limits (setting minimum/maximum order amounts) on Shopify, along with how to set them up.
Properly introducing a price limit app helps your store's operations run more soundly—for example, by preventing small orders that don't justify shipping costs (protecting your profit margin), or preventing bulk-buying of specific collections.
Among the apps introduced here were long-established overseas apps with a proven track record, as well as Japanese-language-supported apps that fit easily with Japanese business customs.
Overseas apps are feature-rich, but their English-only settings screens can sometimes be a hurdle. If you're worried about setup or support, it's reassuring to start by trying a domestic app like "RuffRuff Order Limits," which offers thorough Japanese documentation and support.
Many apps offer a trial period. We recommend actually installing an app first to check whether it satisfies your store's requirements—such as "I want to restrict only certain members" or "I want different limits for different products"—by trying it out in practice.
Lastly, the blog article below introduces in detail other purchase restrictions you can implement on Shopify beyond price limits. Please take a look.
