Tsun ライターチーム

When it comes to boosting sales in a Shopify store, issuing discount coupons is highly effective. However, when considering how to make use of coupons, you may have run into concerns such as the following:

"I can't find the coupon code input field."

"I want to show a coupon code on the cart page, but I don't know how."

To resolve these concerns, this article clearly explains where Shopify's coupon code input field is located, the causes and solutions if it isn't displayed, and 3 ways to display an input field on the cart page.

If you're aiming to boost your purchase rate through coupons, please read to the end.

Shopify's Coupon Code Input Field Is on the Checkout Page

Shopify stores come with a discount coupon issuance feature built in by default. Users can enter the discount code they've obtained into the coupon code input field on the "checkout page" to apply the discount.

The checkout page is the screen where users enter their contact information, shipping address, payment method, and so on.

Let's check on the actual screen. The coupon code input field appears above the subtotal in the top right of the screen.

After entering the coupon code into this input field, users can click "Apply" to apply the discount.

For how to issue coupon codes, please also refer to the article below.

This coupon code input field on the checkout page is included in all Shopify plans and can be used without any special setup. However, editing the design or fields of the checkout page itself is only possible with the Shopify Plus plan, so on plans other than Shopify Plus, you cannot change its position or displayed text.

Causes and Solutions When the Coupon Code Input Field Doesn't Appear on the Checkout Page

If the coupon code input field doesn't appear on the checkout page, there are several possible causes.

The coupon code input field isn't displayed

Cause 1. No active coupon code has been issued in the store

Solution: Issue an active coupon code

If your store hasn't issued an active coupon, the coupon code input field won't appear. Try issuing an active coupon code and checking again.

For how to issue a coupon code, please refer to the article below.

Cause 2. Coupon code entry isn't allowed when checking out via a draft order invoice or link

Solution: Allow coupon code entry when creating the draft order

When sending a draft order invoice, turn on the "Discount code" switch before clicking "Review invoice."

Cause 3. The customer is using Shop Pay at checkout but isn't logged into Shop Pay

Solution: Have the customer log into Shop Pay

If you want to announce the need to log in, note that on plans other than Shopify Plus, you can't customize the checkout page, so make the announcement on a page before checkout instead.

Cause 4. A third-party app installed in your store affects product pricing or alters checkout behavior, causing the coupon code input field not to appear

Solution: Contact the app's provider

For many Shopify apps, you can reach the provider directly from the Shopify admin. Go to "Settings" > "Apps and sales channels," select the relevant app, and inquire about a solution.

3 Ways to Display a Coupon Code Input Field on the Shopify Cart Page

The coupon code input field doesn't appear on the cart page by default. However, some users want to enter a coupon code before checking out so they can know exactly how much they'll be charged. Displaying a coupon code input field on the cart page can improve the customer's shopping experience in this way.

This section introduces 3 ways to display a coupon code input field on the cart page.

Method 1. Use a Theme That Already Has This Feature Built In

This method involves using a theme that has the coupon code input field feature built in by default. For example, the official free themes "Horizon" and "Vessel," released in May 2025, come with this feature from the start.

In the theme editor, turn on the "Allow discounts in cart" switch under "Theme settings" > "Cart," and the coupon code input field will appear on the cart page.

In the theme editor, turn on the 'Allow discounts in cart' switch under 'Theme settings' > 'Cart,' and the coupon code input field will appear on the cart page.

Note that whether a theme's cart page has "a feature to display a coupon code input field" depends on the theme you choose. Also, even if a theme has this feature, the location of the setting may vary. Please check the details for your specific theme.

Method 2. Implement It by Editing Code

If your theme doesn't have "a feature to display a coupon input field on the cart page," you can address this by editing the theme's code.

However, this method requires programming skills (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Liquid, etc.). Incorrect code can cause the cart page to stop functioning properly.

If you're not confident, we recommend hiring a professional or using a Shopify app instead.

Method 3. Implement via a Shopify App

You can use a Shopify app to display a coupon code input field on the cart page. For example, the Shopify cart customization app "UpCart" makes it easy to implement this feature.

This app is available starting at $29.99 per month. "UpCart" is introduced in the article below, so please use it as a reference.

Note, however, that many apps, including UpCart, don't support Japanese, so if you're not comfortable with English, please be careful. *This information is based on data as of July 2025

"RuffRuff Order Bonus" Is Recommended for Running Discount Campaigns

When running discount campaigns using coupon codes, there are a few challenges to keep in mind.

For example, issuing a separate coupon code for each different target customer group can make management cumbersome. There are also customers who, upon not having a coupon code, may feel like they're "missing out" and hesitate to purchase. In some cases, coupon codes end up being distributed to an unspecified number of people via social media as well.

That's where we recommend "RuffRuff Order Bonus."

This app lets you implement all kinds of discount campaigns, including "volume discounts," "discounts based on subtotal amount," "VIP member-only discounts," and "limited-time sales." Since these campaigns don't require issuing coupon codes, you can significantly reduce the effort of managing coupon codes. Discounts are also automatically applied whenever a user meets the qualifying condition, reducing the hassle of entering a coupon code and giving customers a more comfortable shopping experience.

The app is available starting at $9.9 per month, with a 3-day free trial. It also supports Japanese, so if you're considering a discount campaign, please give it a try.
