How to Split Shipping on the Shopify Checkout Page | Automatically Splitting Regular and Pre-Order Products

Tsunライターチーム

This article explains Shopify's split shipping feature, which automatically splits shipping on the checkout page, along with how to set it up and important notes to keep in mind when automatically splitting shipping between regular products and pre-order products.

The blog article below introduces how to split shipping from the order management screen. Please use it as a reference.

About Shopify's split shipping feature

Shopify's split shipping feature automatically splits shipping when an order includes any of the following products:

  • Pre-order products
  • Subscription products
  • Products shipped from different locations
  • Products with different shipping profiles
  • Buy with Prime products

When a cart contains both regular products and pre-order products, the order is automatically split on the checkout page according to the shipping timing.

As a result, each product is processed with the shipping method best suited to its characteristics — for example, regular products are shipped immediately, while pre-order products are shipped on their scheduled release date. Customers don't need to do anything special and can complete the process with a single checkout.

Important notes on splitting shipping between regular products and pre-order products

Please note that not all pre-order products (products set up as pre-orders via a pre-order app or Shopify theme) are eligible for split shipping.

Only pre-order products for which the fulfillment status has been set to "On hold" or "Scheduled" using a pre-order app with purchase options functionality are eligible.

Among pre-order apps made in Japan, only "RuffRuff 予約販売" supports this.

What is RuffRuff 予約販売?

RuffRuff 予約販売 is a Shopify app that lets you easily run pre-orders with simple settings. Beyond pre-orders, it lets you achieve a variety of sales types with a single app, including limited-time sales, VIP-member-only sales, monthly discount sales, and deferred payment.

It is also the only pre-order app in Japan that has been officially adopted by Shopify as a "Built for Shopify" top-quality app.

How to enable Shopify's split shipping feature

(1) From the Shopify admin, go to "Settings > Shipping and delivery"

(2) In the Shipping section, below the list of shipping profiles, select one of the following options

Conclusion

Shopify's split shipping feature is a convenient way to efficiently manage orders that mix regular products and pre-order products.

However, keep in mind that not all pre-order products are eligible for automatic splitting. It's important to use a supported app such as "RuffRuff 予約販売" and set the appropriate fulfillment status.

By taking advantage of Shopify's split shipping feature, you can run a more efficient e-commerce operation with higher customer satisfaction. Be sure to introduce this feature in a way that fits your own operations, and use it to help grow your business.
