We fixed an issue in RuffRuff Order Bonus where amount conditions, fixed-amount discounts, and gift quantities were not converted correctly in carts in a currency other than the store currency.
Key points
- This applies to stores where customers can buy in a currency other than the store currency
- Amounts set in yen or another store currency were used without conversion to the cart currency
- Store owners do not need to change any settings
Settings involved
Every amount you set in the app is in the store currency (for example, yen). This fix affects the following settings that use amounts.
- Eligibility conditions “Cart subtotal price” and “Customer total spent”: Amount-based conditions for discount and gift campaigns
- Discount type “Fixed amount” and “Maximum discount amount”: The discount amount for products, orders, and shipping, and the cap on the discount
- “Repeatable gift” when “Repeat by” is “Subtotal price”: Adds one more gift for each set amount
- “Rounding adjustment”: Rounds the discounted amount to units such as ¥100
What was happening
In carts in a currency other than the store currency, amounts set in yen were used without conversion to the cart currency. For amount conditions at checkout, the conversion also went in the wrong direction.
- Carts in Korean won (KRW) and similar currencies: Amount conditions were met right away, and a repeatable gift of “1 per ¥3,000” could be calculated as dozens of gifts
- Carts in USD and similar currencies: Amount conditions could almost never be met, and a ¥500 fixed-amount discount became a 500 USD discount
Scope of impact
- Affected: Stores where customers can buy in a currency other than the store currency, for example through Shopify “Markets”
- Impact: In campaigns that use the settings above, discount amounts, automatic gift addition and gift quantities, and product page messages and discount display
- Not affected: Carts in the store currency. Percentage (%) discounts, and conditions based on quantity, products, or customer tags
What we fixed
Amounts set in the store currency are now converted to the cart currency with Shopify’s exchange rate for that cart before they are used. For example, “¥5,000 or more” is evaluated as about $32 or more when the rate is about 0.0064.
| Item | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Amount conditions and the base amount of repeatable gifts | The yen amount was compared as if it were in the cart currency (at checkout, the conversion went in the wrong direction) | Compared after conversion to the cart currency |
| “Fixed amount” discounts and “Maximum discount amount” | Applied without conversion (a ¥500 discount became a 500 USD discount) | Discounted by the amount converted to the cart currency |
| “Rounding adjustment” | Also applied to carts in a currency other than the store currency | Applied only to carts in the store currency |
| Carts in the store currency | — | No change |
The storefront and checkout now use the same conversion. Except for the limitations below, gifts added automatically and the checkout result match. In carts in other currencies, amounts are still rounded to the currency’s smallest unit, such as $0.01 or ₩1.
Limitations
- “Customer total spent”: In carts in a currency other than the store currency, Shopify converts total spent at a rate about 2% lower than the cart’s rate. Customers whose total spent is above the condition amount by about 2% or less may not meet the condition at checkout. In that case, a gift added on the storefront causes an error at checkout, and the discount is not applied
- Currencies with a manual exchange rate of 1.0: These carts cannot be told apart from carts in the store currency, so “Rounding adjustment” is applied
Action required from store owners
No setting changes are required. Existing campaign settings stay as they are, and you continue to enter amounts in the store currency.
If you sell in currencies other than the store currency and use the settings above, please check the discount amount and gift quantity in a cart in each currency.
For the amounts that are converted and setup notes, see the help article "How amounts work when you sell in other currencies".
