It can also prevent pre-order and regular products from being ordered together, and can send restock notifications when the restock timing is undetermined.

What Is the Shopify Pre-Order App "PreProduct next-gen pre-order"?

PreProduct is a pre-order app for Shopify stores. It lets you accept pre-orders even before a new product launches or while it's out of stock, enabling early or continued sales of a product.
This app's distinguishing feature is its flexible payment options. You can charge in advance via prepayment or a deposit (partial upfront payment) to improve cash flow, or collect payment later to reduce the risk associated with preparing the product.
You can also run a pre-order campaign before manufacturing a new product to test demand, which helps reduce the risk of large-scale investment. Its communication features with customers are also well developed, helping build customer anticipation after they've placed a pre-order.
PreProduct next-gen pre-order's Main Features and What It Can Do
Here are PreProduct's main features and capabilities.
Product Pre-Orders
Even without stock on hand, you can accept pre-orders for new or out-of-stock products. Products for pre-order can be registered one at a time manually, or registered in bulk using titles and tags.
The period for accepting pre-orders can be set anywhere from 1 to 500 days, or left unspecified. You can also apply a discount targeted at customers who placed a pre-order.
Flexible Payment Options
PreProduct supports 3 payment methods: prepayment, deferred payment, and deposit. Choosing prepayment or a deposit lets you receive payment before the product ships, which can be expected to improve cash flow.
With deferred payment, the customer is charged once the product is ready to ship. This suits products with an uncertain preparation timeline, such as imported goods, or products where production volume tends to fluctuate, and helps avoid trouble in cases where the product can't be prepared as planned.
You can also use the deferred charge feature to obtain advance authorization from the customer for a future payment. This lets store operators gauge demand, while giving customers the peace of mind of "not having to pay until the product is ready."
Customer Portal and Campaign Emails
Tools are provided for communicating with customers at each stage of the pre-order process. The customer portal is a page that customers who placed a pre-order can access. They can check their order, change the quantity, or cancel from there.
Campaign emails let you send payment links, the latest updates, or notify customers of a failed charge for their pre-order.
These features let customers stay informed from the start to the end of the pre-order process, helping increase their trust and sense of security in your store.
PreProduct next-gen pre-order Benefits
Here are 3 benefits of adding PreProduct to Shopify.
Improved Cash Flow
Adding PreProduct lets you accept pre-orders even without stock on hand, so you can secure sales before a new product even launches. In particular, using prepayment or a deposit to receive payment in advance can improve cash flow early on.
Reduced Inventory Risk
Using pre-orders lets you accurately gauge market demand before manufacturing a product. This is especially effective for things like the development stage of a new product, or products with a long lead time such as imports from overseas.
Since you can determine production or purchasing volume based on actual order numbers, you can reduce the risk of holding excess inventory.
Preventing Lost Sales Opportunities
Adding PreProduct lets your store keep accepting pre-orders from customers even if a product temporarily goes out of stock. This helps prevent customers from going to a competitor's product for the reason of "can't buy it right now because it's out of stock."
For new products before launch too, you can start accepting pre-orders without waiting for the release date, letting you capture an order the moment a customer's purchase intent rises. Preventing lost sales opportunities directly leads to increased sales.
Drawbacks of the Shopify App PreProduct next-gen pre-order
PreProduct has many benefits, but it also has drawbacks, which we'll introduce here.
Limited Features
While it offers various pre-order-related features such as accepting pre-orders and early-order discounts, PreProduct's features are limited.
For example, you can't set fine-grained rules such as limiting the purchase quantity for pre-orders (e.g., one per customer) or making pre-orders available only to specific customers (e.g., early access for VIP members).
It may not be well-suited for those who want to implement anti-reselling measures or marketing that leverages pre-orders.
Difficult to Set Up Without Coding Knowledge
Adding PreProduct to your store requires editing your theme's code. The section that needs editing differs depending on your Shopify theme, requiring specialized knowledge of Shopify's theme structure. Be careful, too, since a mistake in editing the code could cause a critical error, such as customers being unable to purchase products.
If you don't have the knowledge or experience to edit Shopify theme files, we recommend either hiring an expert or using an app that's easier to set up.
Doesn't Support Japanese
PreProduct, provided by a London-based company, only supports English. Naturally, support is English-only as well.
This app is operated within the Shopify admin, but this screen is not covered by browser translation features. So, if you're not comfortable with English, you'll likely need to translate each piece of English text to check it.
This app's settings use a lot of specialized terminology, so those who aren't comfortable with English should be careful.

Select a pricing plan.

Approve the subscription.

Once the install is complete, proceed with setup.
In the PreProduct screen shown in the Shopify admin, display the "Setup" screen from the menu tab. Copy the code under "Install by tagging buttons" using the copy button, and paste it into your Shopify theme's source code.

※ This method is for when you want to change your existing "Add to cart" button into a "Pre-order" button. If you want to create a new button instead, write it into your source code using HTML, CSS, and so on.
On the Online Store theme page, click "⋯ (ellipsis)" for the theme where you want to set up pre-orders. Select "Edit code."

Find the "Add to cart" button section within the theme files.
※ The text "Add to cart" may differ depending on the theme. Also note that you won't find the button by searching for the phrase "Add to cart" as literal text.
For reference, in the Dawn theme, the "Add to cart" button is located in the file "buy-buttons.liquid."
To change the "Add to cart" button into a "Pre-order" button, insert the code you copied earlier into the attributes within the button tag. Paste it on a new line.
※ If you're not used to editing code, be careful not to change any other code.

Once pasted, click "Save."
Next, click the "Customize" button under Online Store > Themes in the admin to display the theme editor.
Select "App embeds" in the left side menu, enable "Optimized button loading," and save.

Open a product page, click "Add block" in the product information section, and select the "PreProduct" app. Move it to before or after the "Add to cart" button, and save.

Now let's select the product to accept pre-orders for. In the PreProduct screen, select the "New Listing" tab and choose the product you want to accept pre-orders for.

Configure the pre-order settings. The 3 main setting items are:
- Expected shipping date for the product
- Early discount percentage
- Payment timing

Once configured, finally click "Create listing." This completes the pre-order setup.

Let's check the actual screen. As shown in the image, "Pre-order" is displayed instead of "Add to cart."
※ For products not set up for pre-order, "Add to cart" is displayed as usual.

Clicking "Pre-order" displays a pop-up.

Clicking "Pre-order" again adds the item to the cart.

That covers how to use it.
