What Is Lucky Orange, a Behavior Analytics Tool You Can Use with Shopify?

Lucky Orange is a behavior analytics tool that lets you see in detail how visitors behave on websites built with Shopify or WordPress.
With Lucky Orange, you can visualize where visitors clicked on your site, how far they scrolled, and which page they left from. This makes it possible to identify usability issues and gather concrete data for improving your site.
It also offers real-time visitor behavior tracking and a survey feature, giving you a range of insights that can help improve your conversion rate.
Lucky Orange's Main Features and What You Can Do with Them
Here are Lucky Orange's three main features and what they let you do.
Feature 1. Heatmaps
A heatmap is an analytics feature that shows, using color, where users are looking and clicking on a website. Areas that get a lot of user attention on a page are shown in warm colors, while areas that get little attention are shown in cool colors.
By checking a heatmap, you can gain concrete insights that lead directly to site improvements, such as the effectiveness of your CTA buttons or optimizing where content is placed. The data you collect can easily be shared with your team using the screenshot feature.
Feature 2. Session Recordings
Session recordings let you play back the actual behavior of visitors to your site as video. You can see exactly which pages a user visited, where they clicked, and the process that led to a purchase or to them leaving the site, almost as if you were there watching in person.
Session recordings are segmented by user attributes and behavior. You can see in detail how new users behave on the site, and which pages or actions are causing confusion or frustration for users.
In addition, Live View lets you observe behavior in real time, and you can even use chat to support or guide users who seem to be struggling.
Note that customers' personal information is not recorded.
Feature 3. Surveys
Lucky Orange has its own survey feature that lets you collect feedback directly from visitors. You can gather opinions on a range of topics, such as how users rate your products or how easy your site is to use.
One distinctive point is that you can finely configure when a survey is shown and who it targets.
Examples of display timing include:
- Show after 1 minute
- Show when a specific page is visited
- Show after scrolling 70% or more
Examples of display targets include:
- New visitors
- Visitors from a specific traffic source
- Users who visited within the last ◯ days
and so on.
You can create simple multiple-choice surveys, free-text surveys, 5-star rating surveys, and more, depending on what you want to learn, and you can analyze both response-rate metrics and individual comments.
A Point to Note About Lucky Orange: The Admin Panel Is Not Available in Japanese
Unfortunately, Lucky Orange's admin panel is not available in Japanese.
That said, no initial setup is required to use the heatmap or session recording features, so the lack of Japanese support shouldn't get in the way of getting started. The screens for reviewing the data you've collected are also easy to operate. For the survey feature, you can enter questions and answers in Japanese without any issues.
Browser translation features have also become quite accurate lately, so if you're not comfortable with English, we recommend using one to help you navigate the tool. That said, some parts may come out slightly oddly translated, so keep that in mind.
Benefits of Adding Lucky Orange to Shopify
Here's an explanation of the benefits of adding Lucky Orange to your Shopify store.
Benefit 1. Visualize Visitor Behavior Patterns
With the heatmap feature, you can see at a glance which content users are paying attention to and how far they're scrolling. The session recording feature also lets you watch, as video, exactly how users are interacting with your site, so you can pinpoint specific spots on a page where users tend to get stuck.
Using this visualized visitor behavior, you can move forward with concrete site improvements.
Benefit 2. Identify Points Where You're Losing Sales Opportunities
Since you can watch a recording of the exact moment a cart abandonment or exit happened, you can get to the bottom of "why didn't this turn into a purchase?" On top of that, the survey feature lets you gather reasons for cart abandonment directly from users. You can also narrow things down to important behaviors, such as users who left while holding a high-value cart, letting you analyze the data precisely based on your own business's challenges.
Benefit 3. Efficiently Verify the Effect of Your Improvements
After changing a button's placement or improving a product description, you can keep checking the response with the heatmap. You can also compare behavior before and after the change using session recordings, so you can verify the effect right away. Since screenshots can be shared with multiple people, your team's improvement efforts can also move forward smoothly.

How to Actually Use the Shopify App Lucky Orange
Here's how to actually use Lucky Orange.
Heatmaps | Dynamic Heatmaps
Heatmap data collection begins as soon as you set up Lucky Orange, and no initial configuration is needed. This section explains how to check your heatmaps.
From the side menu in the admin panel, select "Analytics" to open the Analytics screen.

A list of heatmaps for the pages that received traffic will be displayed. You can also narrow this list down by target user, period, device, page, and so on.
Clicking the page you want to view opens your store page in a new tab, with the heatmap displayed as an overlay on the screen.

*The sample image shows a click heatmap
By selecting "Heatmap" at the top of the screen and changing the Event type, you can switch between heatmaps for "Clicks," "Moves" (cursor movement), and "Scroll" (page scrolling).

Clicking "Screenshot" in the top right of the screen captures a screenshot that you can share with your team.

Session Recordings
Session recording also starts automatically once you set up Lucky Orange.
From the side menu in the admin panel, select "Visitors" to open the Visitors screen.

A list of session recordings for users who visited your site is displayed. The list shows information such as "Date/Time," "Pages" (the number of pages viewed during the session), and "Duration" (time spent on the site).
This list can also be narrowed down by target user, period, device, page, and so on.

Clicking the user you want to view plays back the session recording. A timeline is shown on the right side of the screen, indicating when clicks happened and when the page changed; clicking on it jumps straight to that event.

As shown in the video below, you can check a user's actions during a session as video.
Surveys
"Surveys," which show a survey form to specific users or in response to specific user behavior, need to be configured in advance.
Select "Communicate" in the side menu of the admin panel. Click "New Survey."

Choose the survey you want to create from four survey types.
-
Multiple Choice
-
Like or Dislike
-
Rating
-
Open-ended

In this example setup, we'll use Multiple Choice.
Next, choose the number of questions. In this example, we chose Multiple Questions.

Give your survey form a name. This is not shown to users.

First, write the message asking users to respond to the survey. If you want to collect responses more efficiently, it's a good idea to offer an incentive such as a discount coupon.

Note: Lucky Orange itself doesn't have a coupon-issuing feature. Issue a coupon using Shopify's discount feature and include the code in your message.
Create your questions. Enter the question in the text area field, and enter the choices in the Choices field. Clicking "+Add another choice" lets you add more answer choices.

Clicking "+Add Another" lets you add the next question. Be careful, since too many questions can cause users to drop off.

Write a thank-you message. It's a good idea to include a coupon code in this message, or to add a button with a link to guide users further.

Set the trigger (condition) for displaying the survey form. "Simple" lets you configure straightforward settings, while "Advanced" allows for more complex configurations. Here, you can specify the page the survey appears on, target specific user attributes, or target specific actions or behaviors.

Finally, set the display period.
-
Ongoing (no set end date)
-
1 Week
-
2 Weeks
-
1 Month

Finally, review everything and publish it.

The admin panel displays a list of the forms you've created and whether they've received responses. Clicking a form lets you check the content of the responses.
