KOMOJU is a payment provider that enables a wide range of payment methods for online stores, including credit cards and e-money. Connecting KOMOJU to your Shopify store expands your payment options and helps encourage customers to complete their purchase.

This article explains in detail KOMOJU's features, how to connect it with Shopify, and its benefits.

What Is KOMOJU?

Adding KOMOJU to Shopify lets you build an online store that meets a wide range of payment needs — not just cashless payment, but also convenience store payment, bank transfer, and more.

If you were to contract directly with individual payment methods, such as e-money services like PayPay or convenience store payment, you would need to sign up and configure each service separately. With KOMOJU, a single contract makes a wide variety of payment methods available.

A wide selection of payment methods

Within Japan, KOMOJU supports the following payment methods.

  • Credit card payment
  • Convenience store payment
  • Digital wallets / mobile payment
  • Buy-now-pay-later
  • Bank transfer
  • Prepaid payment
  • Carrier billing

Beyond cashless options like credit cards, carrier billing, and e-money services such as PayPay, it also supports convenience store payment and bank transfer.

More payment options lowers the barrier to purchase and helps boost sales. Convenience store payment and mobile payment in particular are important options for customers who don't use credit cards.

Built on a secure payment system

When running an e-commerce site, security around payments is a critical concern.

KOMOJU provides security based on world-class security standards (PCI DSS v3.2.1, as of August 2024), so it can process customer payment information securely and minimize the risk of data breaches. It also includes fraud detection, with mechanisms in place to automatically identify and prevent fraudulent transactions.

Adding KOMOJU creates an environment where both customers and stores can shop and sell with peace of mind.

KOMOJU's Payment Fees

With KOMOJU, a payment fee is charged based on the amount processed. The payment fee varies depending on the payment method used.

Payment Method Payment Fee
Credit card 3.25%
Convenience store payment 2.75%
Bank transfer 1.4%
Mobile payment (e.g., PayPay) 3.5%–15%
Carrier billing 6.6%–15%
Prepaid payment 12%
ATM payment (Pay-easy) 2.75%
Buy-now-pay-later (Paidy) 3.5%

(Payment fees reflect the domestic site pricing as of August 2024.)

KOMOJU has no fixed fees or setup fee. The only cost besides the payment fee is a payout fee for transferring your sales proceeds.

  • For payouts under ¥30,000: ¥220
  • For payouts of ¥30,000 or more: ¥410

※ Fees differ from the above for overseas merchants or transfers to overseas bank accounts.

Refunds Are Easy with KOMOJU

Another feature of KOMOJU is that processing refunds is very simple. For a healthy store operation, refunds are a necessary process that needs to be handled quickly and accurately.

Here, we explain how to issue refunds when Shopify is connected with KOMOJU, along with the time and fees involved.

Handled from the Shopify and KOMOJU dashboards

The refund procedure for orders paid through KOMOJU differs depending on the payment method.

<Credit card and similar: Shopify admin>

From your Shopify admin, open the details screen for the relevant order and process the refund there.

<Bank transfer, convenience store payment, and similar: KOMOJU dashboard>

For refunds on convenience store payment or bank transfer, ask the customer where to send the refund, then submit a refund request from the KOMOJU dashboard.

You can check the progress of a refund in each respective dashboard. If a customer reaches out asking about it, check the progress there.

Refund processing time and fees

The time it takes for a refund to complete varies depending on the customer's payment method. Credit card refunds are typically processed within a few days, but bank transfer or convenience store payment refunds may take anywhere from a few days to about a week.

KOMOJU does not charge a fee for refunding credit card or e-money payments, but a ¥300 fee applies per refund for other payment methods.

Note that the payment fee from the original transaction is not refunded by default in the calculation, but it is possible to have the payment fee refunded as well upon request.

Adding Convenience Store Payment via KOMOJU

Convenience store payment is a useful payment method for customers who are hesitant to register a credit card on an online site.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications' FY2023 Communications Usage Trend Survey, convenience store payment accounted for 34.7% of online purchases, making it one of the leading payment methods.

Comparing KOMOJU with Other Payment Services

KOMOJU is an excellent payment method that connects with Shopify, but here are some points worth checking when considering other payment services as well.

Does it support international payments?

KOMOJU is strong in domestic Japanese payment methods, but it's also expanding its support for cross-border e-commerce. KOMOJU supports payment methods for South Korea, China, Southeast Asia, Europe, and Brazil.

If you're planning to expand internationally, whether a service can accept payments from abroad is an important consideration. Check which currencies and countries each payment service supports.

Balance between cost and features

Payment fees are a critical factor that directly affects your store's profitability. That said, don't compare payment services on payment fees alone — also factor in monthly usage fees and additional features. Weigh both cost and functionality together when making your decision.

Ease of setup and support

Be sure to also check the support system when adopting a payment service.

KOMOJU is very easy to set up, and even those unfamiliar with Shopify can get it up and running smoothly. Its help pages for connecting with and configuring Shopify are extensive, so no technical knowledge is required. It also has a solid support contact and support system in place after setup.

A Better Purchase Experience Through the Shopify–KOMOJU Connection

For running a domestic e-commerce site, KOMOJU is a payment service that greatly improves customer convenience. Its wide range of payment options, along with easy setup and robust support, benefit both customers and stores.

By connecting with Shopify, let's build an e-commerce site that improves customer usability and satisfaction while strengthening your business's credibility and profitability.
