Note: This article covers shipping rate settings for Seino Transportation, which is specific to merchants shipping within Japan. The information below will not be directly relevant if you are not selling in the Japanese market.
Seino Transportation, one of Japan's major domestic logistics companies, focuses on business-to-business (B2B) logistics, and its greatest strength is its ability to handle large, heavy parcels that other carriers don't accept.
For Shopify operators dealing in B2B products, or large furniture and materials shipped primarily to businesses, it can be a very reassuring shipping partner.
However, when considering using Seino Transportation on Shopify, many people run into trouble because Shopify's standard features cannot judge size or calculate volumetric weight.
This article explains Seino Transportation's main services, key points for setting shipping rates on Shopify, and how to use apps to manage weight limits.

Seino Transportation's basic services

Seino Transportation is a delivery carrier with a large share of the business-to-business (B2B) logistics market. The biggest advantages of using Seino Transportation on Shopify are its "high cost performance for business-addressed shipments" and its "strength in large-parcel delivery."
This article explains the main Seino Transportation services that Shopify operators should know about.
- Kangaroo Home Delivery
- Kangaroo Mini Delivery
- Kangaroo Express Delivery
- Kangaroo Postal Mail Service
Seino Transportation also offers many other services geared specifically toward business needs, such as "Kangaroo Business Delivery," "Kangaroo Charter Service," and "Kangaroo Air Freight." For these services, check the Seino Transportation official page.
Notes on using Seino Transportation
While Seino Transportation is strong in business-to-business (B2B) logistics and large-item delivery, small-item delivery to individual homes is generally not its main focus. For this reason, for Shopify stores centered on B2C, we recommend using other carriers (Yamato Transport, Sagawa Express, Japan Post, etc.).
Also, Seino Transportation does not offer cool/cold delivery services (refrigerated/frozen). If you handle products that require temperature control, you'll need to use another carrier such as Yamato Transport or Sagawa Express alongside it.
Also note that since Shopify cannot judge a combination of size and weight, you'll need to register products with a "deemed weight" based on whichever rate bracket — size or weight — ends up larger.
Kangaroo Home Delivery|For B2C
This is the representative service used for shipments addressed to individual homes (B2C) with Seino Transportation.
The size of a parcel eligible for home delivery is calculated as the sum of length, width, and height. Example: 30cm (length) × 40cm (width) × 20cm (height) → Size 100 (80cm or more, less than 120cm)

Kangaroo Home Delivery rates
Kangaroo Home Delivery rates are determined by the following two factors:
- Distance from the origin to the destination
- Whichever bracket is larger, size or weight
Even if a parcel is light, the rate will be higher if the size is large.
<Reference rates: example rates for shipping a product from the Kanto region to the Kansai region>
| Size / weight | Example rate (tax included) |
|---|---|
| 60cm / up to 2kg | ¥1,122 |
| 70cm / up to 5kg | ¥1,408 |
| 100cm / up to 10kg | ¥1,683 |
| 130cm / up to 20kg | ¥1,991 |
(Example: in the table above, if the size is 60cm and the weight is 5kg, ¥1,408 applies)
※ The above is only a guideline; actual rates vary depending on contract terms, packaging, and shipping conditions.
If you want to check the rate from your own location to a specific area, check the Seino Transportation rate estimate page.
Kangaroo Home Delivery restrictions and notes
- Size: home delivery is within 130cm total for the three dimensions
- Weight: up to 20kg
- Number of parcels: up to 1
- Coverage area: Okinawa and remote islands require an additional fee
- Target: mainly addressed to individual homes (a different service is recommended for business addresses)
If you exceed the above restrictions, actual delivery costs will be added.
Kangaroo Mini Delivery|For B2B
Kangaroo Mini Delivery is a service for shipping relatively compact parcels — small and medium-sized products, documents, and the like — to businesses at a reduced cost.
Also, if conditions are met, you can use "Kangaroo Business Delivery," which supports next-morning delivery for an additional fee (+¥165 to ¥550).
Kangaroo Mini Delivery rates
Kangaroo Mini Delivery rates are determined by the following two factors:
- Distance from the origin to the destination
- Whichever bracket is larger, size or weight
※ Like Kangaroo Home Delivery, the rate structure is based on "distance" and "whichever is larger between size and weight."
<Reference rates: example rates for shipping a product from the Kanto region to a business in the Kansai region>
| Size / weight | Example rate (tax included) |
|---|---|
| 60cm / up to 2kg | ¥1,128 |
| 70cm / up to 5kg | ¥1,419 |
| 100cm / up to 10kg | ¥1,700 |
| 130cm / up to 20kg | ¥2,024 |
(Example: in the table above, if the size is 60cm and the weight is 5kg, ¥1,419 applies)
※ The above is only a guideline; actual rates vary depending on contract terms, packaging, and shipping conditions.
If you want to check the rate from your own location to a specific area, check the Seino Transportation rate estimate page.
Kangaroo Mini Delivery restrictions and notes
- Size: within 130cm total for the three dimensions
- Weight: up to 20kg
- Coverage area: Okinawa and remote islands require an additional fee
- Target: business addresses only
Depending on the unloading environment or facility conditions at the destination, redelivery or additional costs may occur.
Kangaroo Express Delivery|Large items, heavy items, multiple parcels
Kangaroo Express Delivery is Seino Transportation's flagship transport service. It's suited for "large products" that exceed the scope of ordinary parcel delivery, or for shipping a "large number of boxes (multiple parcels)" in a single order. If your Shopify store handles heavy items such as furniture, tires, building materials, or industrial equipment, this service will likely be your main option.
Kangaroo Express Delivery rates
Kangaroo Express Delivery rates are determined by the following three factors:
- Distance from the origin to the destination
- Whichever is larger: the product's actual weight or the weight converted from volumetric weight
- Number of parcels
The most important thing to be aware of here is Seino Transportation's unique concept of "volumetric weight." Volumetric weight is calculated with the following formula.
Volumetric weight calculation formula Volumetric weight (kg) = length (m) × width (m) × height (m) × 280 (kg)
※ Seino Transportation's general conversion factor (Example: 0.5m × 0.5m × 0.5m × 280 = equivalent to 35kg)
※ Long items use a different calculation formula.
※ The actual conversion factor and calculation method may vary depending on packaging and contract terms.
Even if the actual weight is light, if the box is large, the "weight" calculated using the formula above is adopted as the rate basis.
For details, check the Kangaroo Express Delivery official page.
Notes on Kangaroo Express Delivery
With Kangaroo Express Delivery, additional fees or work charges may occur depending on the destination's location conditions.
- Forklifts cannot be used
- Manual unloading is required
- High-rise floors, narrow roads
- Designated in-building delivery at complex facilities or office buildings, etc.
These conditions especially affect the rate for large or heavy items, so it's important to confirm them in advance.
Kangaroo Postal Mail Service
Kangaroo Postal Mail Service is a "bulk shipping service for businesses" in which Seino Transportation acts as the intermediary and uses Japan Post's delivery network (Yu-Mail) to drop catalogs or thin products into mailboxes.
It's a fulfillment-type service in which Seino Transportation handles everything from product receipt and storage to picking, inspection, and packing as one package, letting you outsource the entire back-office workload associated with shipping.
Note that this is not something you set directly as a shipping method in the Shopify admin — it's premised on an individual contract and operational design with Seino Transportation.
Kangaroo Postal Mail Service rates
Special negotiated rates leveraging Seino Transportation's scale advantages are applied, which can keep the per-item cost low. The specific unit price depends on contract terms such as shipping volume, so please contact Seino Transportation directly.
Kangaroo Postal Mail Service restrictions
- Size: within 36cm × 25cm × 3.0cm
- Weight: up to 3kg
※ Some contents cannot be handled, including correspondence, cash, and high-value items.
Key points when setting Seino Transportation shipping rates on Shopify
While Seino Transportation is strong in business-oriented and large-product delivery, it adopts a rate structure premised on "volumetric weight" and "individual quotes/additional fees" that differ from other carriers.
Here are two key points for setting Seino Transportation shipping rates on Shopify.
Register products based on "size-based weight" and "volumetric weight"
Shopify's standard features have no mechanism to automatically determine shipping rates from the "sum of the three dimensions" of a parcel. For this reason, when using Seino Transportation, you need to calculate a "deemed weight" using the following logic for each service, and register it in the "weight" field on the product registration page. Note that an incorrect deemed-weight setting can easily lead to significant swings in shipping cost.
For Kangaroo Home Delivery (size 130 or less)
Kangaroo Home Delivery rates apply whichever bracket is larger between "size" and "weight." To correctly apply the size-based rate on Shopify, register the maximum weight for each size as the "deemed weight."
Example: for a size-100 product (up to 10kg), register it as "10kg" regardless of actual weight.
For Kangaroo Express Delivery (large/heavy items)
For Kangaroo Express Delivery (large/heavy items), the rate for Kangaroo Express Delivery applies whichever weight bracket is larger between "actual weight" and "volumetric weight."
Example: even if the actual weight is 10kg, if the volumetric weight is 30kg, register "30kg" on Shopify.
Especially with Seino Transportation, since quotes are often based on "weight," an incorrect deemed-weight setting can easily lead to significant swings in shipping cost — this requires particular care.
Countermeasures for additional fees to Okinawa and remote islands
Something you should consider in advance when operating with Seino Transportation is the additional fee that occurs when shipping to Okinawa or remote islands.
Shopify's standard settings have no feature to automatically add a surcharge only for specific postal codes (such as remote islands). For this reason, there's a risk of "ending up in the red due to additional fees."
Since "additional billing after the order" (which harms the shopping experience) and "setting the base shipping rate to include the additional fee" (which makes shipping expensive and affects conversion rate) are not realistic, we recommend taking one of the following measures:
- Use a paid app
- Have the shop absorb the cost
For shops that expect a certain volume of orders from remote islands, or that handle large products, it's worth considering automating this early with an app. If you're considering introducing an app, refer to the following article.
How to comply with Seino Transportation's delivery rules on Shopify
When using Seino Transportation, an accurate shipping-rate design based on parcel weight and volumetric weight is essential. In particular, since Seino Transportation adopts a rate structure that combines weight, volume, and parcel count, it's important to be aware that shipping costs can swing significantly depending on your settings.
While Shopify's standard features allow you to set shipping rates based on weight, they don't include a feature to "automatically block orders that exceed a specified range."
For this reason, when an unexpectedly large order or multiple purchases of a large product occur, there's a risk of causing "shipping-rate losses" or "trouble due to inability to ship."
Specifically, cases like the following may occur.
Losses under a flat shipping-rate setting
If you use a shipping-rate setting such as "nationwide flat rate," a large order can raise the weight bracket to Kangaroo Express Delivery or turn the shipment into multiple parcels, and the actual cost will far exceed the set shipping rate, squeezing your profits.
Size overage for Kangaroo Postal Mail Service
Kangaroo Postal Mail Service, which has a thickness limit, is only a supplementary shipping method. If multiple purchases cause it to exceed the specified size (3cm), you'll need to switch to Kangaroo Home Delivery, which creates unexpected effort and cost.
Use an app to apply weight limits
To prevent this kind of trouble before it happens, using the Shopify app "RuffRuff Order Limits" is effective. By applying flexible order limits based on your own shipping rules, you can maintain healthy store operations.
For example, you can restrict checkout if the total weight in the cart exceeds a certain range (e.g., up to 20kg). You can also automatically display a message such as "This exceeds the limit for a single parcel. Please split your order into multiple payments," which helps prompt customers toward a smooth re-order.
Setting up this kind of order limit on the system side helps you avoid shipping-rate losses and shipping delays, achieving stable operations.

Make smart use of Seino Transportation on your Shopify store
This article organized Seino Transportation's main services and the approach to shipping-rate design and weight limits when operating on Shopify.
Seino Transportation is a delivery carrier that delivers high cost performance for large products, heavy items, and business-addressed shipments. Its ability to flexibly handle cases that are difficult for Yamato Transport or Sagawa Express to manage is a major strength.
On the other hand, it's less suited to B2C delivery or small products, and there are a fair number of rules — such as volumetric weight and additional fees — that need to be sorted out in advance. Making use of Shopify apps, with operations premised on system-side control, is essential.
Start by sorting out whether your own products are "aimed at businesses or individuals" and "which size/weight bracket they fall into." From there, combine shipping rules and tools to build a shipping design that doesn't overreach.
